Country Folks

Me and some of my urban friends have just had a discussion with a girl from Janesville Parker High School, who says aside from going mudding, one wholesome activity in which she enjoys participating is deer shining. This where some kids apparently drive around looking for deer, and when they find one, they shine it in the eyes with a spotlight, making it freeze, and this is apparently a good use of these people's time. I had never heard of this and can not believe that it is enjoyable.

It's actually quite popular in the northern portion of Wisconsin. May I also point out that shooting deer while doing this is in fact illegal. Both the shining, causing them to stop and be an unsporting shot, and also the fact that it's night and you can't hunt at night make it so.

It's not illegal because it is unsportsmanlike, Sean. Most of deer hunting is. It's always illegal to shoot from the road, whether it's night time or day time.

It is fun. Honestly, it's not boring like it sounds. The only good part of deer hunting, practically.

Actually Sean I lived on a Indian reservation before returning to Janesville and have taken part in deer shining. It is legal granted that you are Native American and are shining within the designated area which were I lived happened to be the Whole reservation. Native Americans also are given a extended hunting season which i believe goes from Sept 8th through Jan 1st during this extended hunting season they are allowed to go off reservation during certain times with the proper tags they are also not allowed to shine outside of the reservation. When shining no one other than a native american(s) can be present in the vechicle. If you are stopped and are caught violating any rules you can have your licence revoked. As for the worlds other races(no offence) i guess youll have to resort to the regular hunting seasons.

Actually, Kirk, everyone can shine on any day during the year. Most people, except for Native Americans as you pointed out, can't do it after 10 PM during bow, gun, and muzzleloader seasons, but that still leaves a good 5 hours of darkness right now for anyone in the state to shine.

Man John Dawg really spurred some discussion talking about deer shining, I didn't know it was such a hot topic.

Put red cellophane (or even red color crayon) over the light and the animals will not even know there is a light shining upon them. Without being frightened you can watch them go about there normal behavior.

Spotlighting is a old rustler and poacher technique; a good way to get shot by a farmer --- very much hated!
