Katrina

The best blog entry I've seen about Katrina to date. It's a first-hand account of what happened to two people and the HUGE FAILURE of the recovery effort that they encountered. I would put it up there as a must read, especially if you're a law enforcement employee.

Do you think it's a true story? I'm believing it's true, but it's almost too horrible to be real.

Did the law enforcement screw up? yes. Lying to people about buses to get them to move, making people move at gunpoint, and confiscating food are just bad mistakes. But you must also remember that people were reported to be shooting at rescue helicopters and police officials. When news like that spreads, it makes the police scared to face a large crowd, because they don't know if they will get shot at or not. I'm not excusing their actions, but I can see where they were overworked with no help whatsoever and no solution in sight. They too were just trying to survive.

That I think is how normal people would respond, with fear. However, the police are there to keep order and I think they failed at this point. In the case of this story they were helping to incite a riot as opposed to calm one.

Numerous agencies had trouble with this situation, a lot of the breakdowns appear to be occuring with FEMA. I do not think that the actions I hear the police took were justified by the failures of other though. A good police officer I feel should be aware something like this could happen when they're getting themselves into this field. I don't feel their response was appropriate.

The police officers were in a much better position for survival than those that were not in law enforcement. They should have used that position to lead the others to safety instead they refused that oppurtunity.

I'm sure plenty of police officers did wonderful things, but in this case they did not.
