Overbay To Toronto

In the second of two fairly big moves for Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin, Lyle Overbay has been sent to the Toronto Blue Jays. In exchange the Brewers received right-handed pitcher Dave Bush, outfielder Gabe Gross, and left-handed pitching prospect Zach Jackson. Dave Bush is expected to compete for one of the last spots in the starting pitching rotation, so that is a solid addition. Five solid starting pitchers would really help put the Brewers over the top, especially with the help of Dan Kolb in the bullpen now.

It is sad to see Lyle Overbay go, especially since they played Pearl Jam everytime he came up to bat, however the addition of a solid starting pitcher is too much to pass up. Overbay lacked true power (only 19 home runs last season) and wasn't able to hit over .300 for a whole season. I don't believe he was a exceptionally great fielder either (but don't quote me). As a first basemen this won't make you an All Star anytime soon. I wish they would have been able to convert him to an outfielder role, however the starting outfielders have solidified their spots already (Jenkins, Lee, Clark), and it would have been very expensive to have Overbay not playing everyday. Prospect Prince Fielder on the other hand is ready to go and I think will make a serious impact in the league over the new few years. This move cements the Brewers plan to have him hitting home runs in a Brewer jersey as the starting first baseman in the coming season.

You may have noticed that the Brewers have traded their arguably their most popular player away for the past three seasons in a row. First it was Richie Sexson in a deal that landed the Brewers half a starting lineup (including Lyle Overbay). Last season it was sophomore slumping Scott Posednik, for which we received Carlos Lee in return. You may note now that both of those trades were brilliant and have really helped put the club in a position to win games. I would think more of the same will result from this trade.

Looks good Doug Melvin
