Gould on the Nasty Marquette Interchange Billboard
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Whitney Gould takes on the billboard in the southeast corner of the Marquette Interchange.
The billboard appears to be a product of a bad lease with the city where the vision of the rebuilt eastern end of the Menomonee Valley (new train station, Harley museum, and 6th Street viaduct) wasn't in the works when the city signed the long-term lease with Clear Channel for the billboard.
I agree with Gould's column, the billboard is a major issue. If there was a way to eliminate the massive shaft that holds it up so that it can be seen on the elevated freeway, it wouldn't be nearly as bad.
Unlike Gould, I don't think the view is the worst from westbound 794. I think it's the worst when you're down on the south side of 794 and see that massive pole coming out of the ground and look up to see what is actually on top of it.
With new development in the location after the completetion of the Marquette Interchange Project, perhaps it can strapped to the top of a building for the rest of its lease. This might go a long way to eliminating it from sight from the ground level.
The billboard is visible on the left corner of the included image with this post.
