Porsche Designs Super Efficient Hybrid
Hybrids, which to me seem like the logical path to take reduce oil consumption, just got a nice boost from the people at Porsche.
Porsche has designed a hybrid SUV (Cayenne), that can use solely the electrical motor when going 70-mph. That's a big improvement over what is currently available, a supposed 25% efficiency improvement. The car should be available in 2009.
Obviously, it's important to know that Toyota and company aren't asleep at the wheel, they're also developing improvements for the Prius, Camry, and other hybrid cars.
The hybrid revolution is clearly taking foot in Milwaukee, at least amongst urban dwellers. You see them everywhere around downtown. I can't speak for the suburbs, but I wouldn't imagine it drops off that much.
Back in Janesville where I raised? They're still hard to find. The locally-built Suburban is still everywhere.
Hybrids with their electrical engines have one advantage for urban dwellers that I think is being largely overlooked. They accelerate really quietly. Pairing this with the reemergence of urban dwelling and you have a recipe for vastly improving the quality of big city life.
Right now it's a struggle when I am walking down the street and talking on my cell phone because of the amount of noise from cars starting and stopping, especially city buses. The emergence of hybrid cars will make loud intersections a thing of the past.
