Man Laws On Hold

Miller has decided to shelve the Man Law advertisement campaign for now.

Thank you! They weren't too funny anymore.

Don't panic, they're probably coming back later this year.

Links Not Working

It was brought to my attention today that some of the links on this page didn't work.  I'm well aware, it's all the fault of what will be known as the "The Great Web Hosting Crash of 2006" or "Why You Shouldn't Use Vital Speeds".

I'm working to find some backups of the data, but until now dead links is what they'll remain.

James Brown and Chicago

JB

So I'm hanging out at Union Station again for another half hour before I catch my train back to Milwaukee. The Chicago Bears won the NFC Championship Game yesterday and will head to the Super Bowl, so there are Bear fans coming out of the woodwork.

I'm sitting here and a couple of them start talking about how the Bears are going to do this and that. How Rex Grossman sucks (he does, but if you're a Bears fan don't admit this), how they miss the Fridge, how they're going to stick it to Ditka. The best though is this guy next to me who refuses to believe that James Brown is dead and says that he read in the paper that the Bears asked him to perform at the Super Bowl half-time show.

How many Bears fans does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Snow

Cars in Snow

It's snowing today because I'm traveling. Did you notice how it didn't snow most of December? It's because I wasn't traveling out of the state. The minute I leave the state, snow is going to come a falling.

In other news, I've had a good weekend in Minneapolis.

Free Wifi Courtesy of Amtrak

I'm sitting in the Chicago Union Station food court on my way from Milwaukee to Minneapolis (I'm cheap, I take Megabus). When I first sat down I wasn't able to get online via any form of free wifi, but the tide has turned. Amtrak has an access point setup that didn't want to give me an IP address at first, but after leaving my laptop on for 20 minutes it apparently caved in.

Wahoo, free wifi at Union Station.

For those that may experience this problem in the future, the IP address it gives you is your standard 192.168.1.X and your gateway is 192.168.1.254. That should prevent you from having to wait for an IP address.

Happy surfing.

Minnesota This Weekend

I'm headed to Minnesota this weekend, so if you want something you're going to have to call me starting Wednesday night.

Faifthful Readers

I am sorry I have abandoned you faifthful readers.  Things have been absolutely insane with the work required to start the new business, but I'm loving it.  At the moment, let's plan on a public launch next Monday.

Missing Fantasy Football

Green Warming Up
Originally uploaded by compujeramey.
I like Mondays a whole lot more when there is fantasy football stats to look up, and strategy to plot for next week.

For those who are curious, the Dot Com Bombers (my team), finished third in the league. It was a successful year, although I should have done better.

It's amazing. I suggest you give it a listen (download). If you like it, go buy the CD.

It's featured on The O.C.'s sixth soundtrack album.

Whole Foods and Brats

Whole Foods Market
Originally uploaded by JustJon.
There is a disconnect with the organic food at Whole Foods. The food is organic, therefore there are less chemicals used in the growth of the plants and animals. Should the food not cost less than?

On the same line, Whole Foods has a restaurant/bar in Milwaukee. They sell brats, but they're $5.00. That's an absurd amount of money for a brat. Tad and I went today with the intention of getting one, but upon finding the price out, we left. Once we're 21 we'll probably go back, you can get beer and walk around the store grocery shopping. You really can't beat that.

Recycling

Rea sigh cling

I finished a drink today and a friend threw away the plastic container for me. Unfortunately, she threw it in the garbage. Me, being me, told her that I recycle and that she should pull that out (I had just changed the bag, garbage was empty except for the bottle). She then asked me if I seriously recycled. I said yes, she asked why. I told her I like the earth I live on.

I don't get what is wrong with my generation, but somehow they fell off the recycling boat. It's as if the simple concept of reduce, reuse, recycle doesn't make sense in their heads and it really depresses me.

Isn't this something we can teach kids in elementary school?

In a day in age where a movie like Inconvenient Truth packs theaters, why is there still so little recycling?

We're screwed at this rate.

Maybe instead of a war we could spend our money on recycling education.

What does it take to get a more legitimate tax on bottle and aluminum can use going?

Sirius and XM Merger

Sirius and XM side by side
Originally uploaded by Code Wizard.
There are rumblings about satellite radio companies, XM and Sirius, merging. While the rumors don't seem to carry much weight behind them, I thought I should still weigh in with some thoughts on why this is and is not a good idea.

The good.

The super company would compete not against another satellite radio company, but against other forms of radio. That spells profit, something that has eluded XM and Sirius to date.

Increased customer satisfaction because all major sports networks are available on one satellite radio network.

Profit means the company is sticking around for a long time. While it doesn't look like either company is going to disappear anytime soon, how long can they go without turning a profit?

The bad.

The super company would be presumably much slower to change and adopt to changes in the overall market (i.e. podcasting), something they have been slow to do so far.

People would probably lose their jobs (although maybe this is needed for satellite radio to be profitable?)

They could jack up the rates (I see this as overall unlikely).

Most importantly, this change, while streamlining long-term consumer options, would most likely bring havoc upon existing customers. Customer service you can be assured would go down the drain. The super company would have to choose which network to ultimately stick with, which means millions of subscribers are going to have to replace their devices before their usable lifetime ends.

Summary
There is no skating around the last issue. A lot of customers are going to suffer at some point if there is a merger. New customers will benefit from a united programming effort, but existing customers are in for a bumpy ride.

Steve Jobs and Stock Options

Jobs&Woz with Apple1
Originally uploaded by Anunnaki.
Turns out Steve Jobs may have been more involved with the back-dating of stock options at Apple (and potentially Pixar) than we were led to believe.

Let's do some basic math.

Apple is under investigation for back-dating stock options. Pixar is under investigation for back-dating stock options. Jobs was CEO at Apple and Pixar. I think there may be a connection here. The connection? Steve Jobs.
